Is Your Workplace Ready For The Flu Season????

The 2017 flu season is fast approaching, have you thought about your workplace immunisations for seasonal influenza??

In 2016 Australia, has had a total of 83,837 laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza, with 21,606 of those being in Queensland. It is estimated that 1 in every 4 people will contract the seasonal influenza virus strain each year. The disease can be potentially fatal, contributing to between 1500 and 3500 deaths annually. Not to mention in Australia it is responsible for more than 18,000 hospitalisations and 300,000 GP visits per year!

Can your workplace afford to have 1 in 4 people away sick?

Contrary to popular belief influenza is NOT the common cold. Influenza is seasonal and is caused by the influenza A,B and C viruses. The combination varies from year to year and a new vaccine needs to be made each year to combat the changing strain. Influenza unlike the common cold can develop into more serious conditions such as pneumonia, and symptoms tend to be more severe then the common cold, thus potentially leading to more sick days for your staff!!!

So what can you do to limit the amount of employee sick days due to influenza this season?

Studies have shown that workplaces that participate in annual influenza immunisations have seen a 43% reduction in employee sick days off work. Annual workplace immunisation helps to protect your employees and workplace from the effects of the virus and the ongoing consequences associated with the infection in the workplace.

Quad Flu Vaccine? What is the difference?

Previously with the Tri Flu Vaccine experts only included one H1N1 virus, one H2N2 virus and a strain of B-virus in the annual vaccine. This was insufficient as there is two main B Virus strain lineages which means if they chose 1 strain then the majority of the viruses for the season contained the other strain of B Virus the immunisation would be less effective.

 With the Quad Flu Vaccine experts can now include both B strains to better protect against the mutating virus. The Quad Flu Vaccine includes the following viruses.

-          H1N1 Virus

-          H2N2 Virus

-          2 x B Virus Strains

 Each year the combination of the strains changes as the Influenza Viruses mutate. The 2017 Flu Season Quad Vaccine includes:

1.     A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1) pdm09 - like virus;

2.     An A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) - like virus;

3.     A B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like virus

4.     A B/Phuket/3073/2013 - like virus
